Vintage Gold Scarab Drop Earrings (givenchy)

I love scarab jewelry, and scarab earrings are a little harder to find than the ubiquitous scarab bracelet. How did a lowly specimen become an exhausted figure, represented in jewelry for centuries? It started with the ancient Egyptians, who associated scarabs (aka dung beetles) with the sun god Ra, and considered the animal and important representation of personal growth, and the cycle of life. During the Victorian era, "Egyptomania" took hold, and scarabs became more popular than ever— in some cases, actual desecrated beetles were used in the jewels. As of late, we've seen houses like Gucci embrace the scarab. These earrings are not signed, but Givenchy made an identical pair in the 1980s, so I strongly believe these are Givenchy. They are gold-filled (the absolute closest thing to solid gold, but drastically reduces the price; composed of a solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base, usually sterling silver). The stones are made to resemble carnelian and lapis lazuli, with little green accent stones. Measures 42 mm long x 18 cm, and finished with a clip-on back.
