Victorian Antique Gold Horseshoe And Clover Pendant

We can all use a little extra luck these days, and I will never say no to a Victorian pendant. It dates to the Victorian era/late 19th century, and it made of gold-fill (the absolute closest thing to solid gold, but drastically reduces the price; composed of a solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base, usually sterling silver). It contains two good luck charms: a horseshoe, and a four-leaf clover. Horseshoes have been considered good luck for centuries, a belief that is thought to date back to the Babylonians (ca. 625–539 BC; the horseshoe shape resembled a crescent moon, and invoked the protective poweers of the lunar goddess. Early Christians adopted this pagan belief, which was corroborated by the legend of St. Dunstan. Dunstan was a blacksmith in 10th century Britain, who was said to have shoed the Devil's cloven hoof, causing such pain that the devil vowed to never venture to a threshold with a horseshoe nailed above. Dunstan became the Archbishop of Canterbury and was elevated to sainthood. In the Middle Ages, The Druids (Celtic priests) believed that a clover with four leaves allowed one to see fairies and other mystical spirits— warding off the bad spirits, and bringing good luck to the beholder. In the 1620, English writer John Melton wrote, "If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing, "cementing the four-lead clover's status as a powerful talisman. The pendant total drop is 1 1/8", with a bale just over 1/8" that will accomodate most chains; Note that the chain is not included but please contact me if you would like one: shop@verybreezy.com
