Fornasetti Farfalle Ceramic Valet Dish 50s

Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) was a was a versatile and eclectic Milanese artist, characterized by an unstoppable creative flair as an engraver, interior decorator, and artist that made him one of the most prolific figures of the 20th century, and difficult to ascribe to a specific movement (I totally plagiarized that from Wikipedia because it is the best way I've seen Fornasetti's genius succinctly described). His decorative pieces speak to design lovers on a very special level; His whimsical yet straightforward pieces find themselves in the chicest interior designers' (and their clients') spaces. This little valet tray sparked an immediate reaction in me because it had a very Damien Hirst feel. This is from his Farfalle collection and may be considered an ashtray, but has been reborn as a valet tray these modern days. How ever you choose to use it, it will definitely add some tongue-in-cheek fabulousness to your space!

~MEASUREMENTS:

5 1/2"L x 4 1/4"W x 3/4"H

~FEATURES:

White ceramic

Multicolor, muted tone butterfly transfer printed motif

On underside: Fornasetti-Milan Made in Italy with the hand and paintbrush logo image

~CONDITION:

Very good condition. When I found it it was covered in hard water stains (it may have been used as a soap dish or a plant tray... I am not sure) and I wasn't sure that I could get it back to good. It was very labor intensive and careful work to not destroy the butterfly decorations, but so absolutely worth it. No butterflies were harmed in the restoration of this item! They were, however, lightly scratched in their previous life--I have shown the worst of it in closeup pics--along with two small chips on one edge. Though not in pristine condition, this little tray is an amazing piece of Fornasetti history, ready to float in to your world.
